Mary Schuytema has been working in clay since 1981. She received her BFA in ceramics in 1985 and her MFA in sculpture in 1990.
Mary's main emphasis is on functional work, but she enjoys working on a line of Spirit Houses that are sculptural in nature. Spirit Houses can be objects of reflection or a place for your spirit to rest. Some are complex, some are simple.
This series has become about ways in which we know ourselves or allow others to know us. The houses are made of stoneware or porcelain clay with additions of wire, reed, and other materials. They are finished in a variety of ceramic surfaces, as well as oxides and oil paint.
